Leo and Wes Visser

Northern Orchards Inc. was started by Leo Visser, a Dutch immigrant, in the late 1960’s.  Working with local farmers, he started a business selling fruit and vegetables door-to-door in downtown Toronto.  Seeing an opportunity to sell larger volumes, he started selling wholesale to retail stores at the Ontario Food Terminal in the early 70’s.  He built up a business supplying carrots, potatoes, eggs, onions, cabbage, lettuce and finally apples to the food stores of Ontario. Over the years the apple sales slowly became the main product until the early 1990’s when the decision was made to sell only apples.

Wes Visser

In 1996, Leo’s son Wes took over the day-to-day operations of the company, in charge of sales and purchasing.  Leo continued his involvement in the company until 2021 when he officially retired. In 2003, Wes’ son, Tyler, came on board to work full-time and is currently the Vice-President In charge of sales and storage operations. In 2020, Tim Good, joined full-time as the warehouse manager and is in charge of the packing operations and Food Safety.

The company invested in a new cold storage and distribution warehouse with a modern apple packing line in 2020, located by Newmarket, Ontario.  While not growers, we work closely with orchards to offer the best Canadian apples available . Our main strength is that by working with multiple orchards from different regions of Canada,  we can consistently supply our stores with quality apples.
